When we first saw the range from Humongous earlier this year, we kind of flipped out. Horror! What could be better. Humongous is a new design team that has been formed to serve as a creative outlet of many mediums. Based in Toronto, they get inspired by horror & dark related things, and try to bring those images through excellent design concepts. Their first project is complete and comes in the form of graphics on 5 separate t-shirts, limited to 15 for each design.

Last August on a particularly steamy night, Public hosted the Launchpad Art Collaborative Show. Artists involved included HVW8, Stash, Sam Flores, Mars-1, Skam, Tiffany Malakooti, and many more. Our pal DJ Howl kept the heads nodding as attendees checked out the artwork. As an extra bonus, guests were treated to a complimentary limited run Launchpad t-shirt by Recon. How can you go wrong?

Nike AF1 East Coast Pavilion

As part of its ongoing year-long celebration of the Air Force 1’s 25th anniversary, Nike recently revealed the new Air Force 1 East Coast Collection in the new Nike Sportswear Pavilion at Nike Toronto, 110 Bloor West in Downtown Toronto.

The pavilion features a large scale installation detailing the relationship between NYC, Philly, Baltimore and the AF1. The collection features a series of specially detailed and crafted AF1’s that pay homage to AAU programs, local parks, and the three cities that were key to the rise of Force. A stylized representation of the I-95 highway travels thru the room to tie all the stories together.

The sleek, minimal room was paired with lush, modular wooden fixtures that showcases the seasonal collection inspired by and dedicated to the the U.S. cities that started the legendary story of the AF1. An interactive station allows customers to browse the massive 1thology.com site.

Nike Toronto Halloween Room

Just in time for Halloween, the Nike Toronto Bloor Street White Room took on a ghastly transformation to celebrate the launch of the Halloween sneakers pack. The room and artwork took inspiration from the product, which included the “Frankenstein” AF1, laser-cut Blazers, orange and black AF1′s, and our personal favourite – the Glow-in-the-dark Dunk Hi’s.

Diorama boxes with black lighting housed the GID Dunks, AF1′s sat behind huge cracks, and lace-inspired mummy wrap skinned the entire room. But the main draw was a stunning giant painted mural, featuring gobs, blobs, furry creatures and of course, the sneakers. All that, plus haunting RZA instrumentals playing in the background. Eerie! Stop by Nike Toronto in you’re town, this room is a must see.

The photography of Rick Kwan

Rick Kwan has an MA in Design Studies from Central St. Martins and now lives in Hong Kong with his wife. He is the the Creative Development Manager for DDB Hong Kong and is currently working on a photographic project titled ‘undvlpd’.

In between he passes the time by photographing his hip-hop heroes for Blues and Soul Magazine and has been exhibited by Carhartt in Covent Garden. He maintains his sanity by creating varieties of fried rice whilst watching Wong Kar Wai films, but occasionally fiends for an Oh Henry and a Tim Hortons drive thru. Tragically Hip? He would like to think so…

Ryan Allan at Xspace

Ryan Allan exhibited some of his portrait and lifestyle photography at Xspace in Toronto. The closing party went down on Saturday, August 13th, with an after party next door at Adrift in Kensington Market.

“That’s a RAP” featured huge oversized portraits which took over the front of the gallery, while a line-up of lightboxes commanded the second half of the room. The boxes featured some amazing shots of skaters getting down, in striking detail. Good to see more skate events going on in the T!

Nike Toronto Green Bean Room

If you’re in the Toronto area, stop by the Nike Toronto Bloor Street Sport Culture Pavilion…the room has been fully decked out to celebrate the history of Air and the introduction of Nike “Green Bean” Rejuvenation Pack. Installations included sneaker dissections, a Nike Air stencil, hand illustrated Air Max posters by Lukas Geronimas, and three insane diaorama’s.

Each box represents a cross section of the earth, with the Air Max 90, 95 and 360 featured in its own unique environment. Plus mini-sneaker ants! And the Mars Blackman skull is too much. Scroll right to see all the highlights.

Fighting x Robin Nishio x adidas

As a preview to the grand opening of the adidas originals store on Queen Street in Downtown Toronto, adidas partnered with Breadwinner to create a large scale mural that embodied juxtapozed images of the brand’s sport culture history. Fighting and Robin Nishio (some of our favourite CDN artists, by the way) were asked to mix and match images on the store hording. The result was a collaborative piece that incorporated abstract and comic elements to create an eye dazzling installation. Can’t wait for the store opening. Scroll right for all the pics.
